This is relatively new treatment which is simple, safe and highly effective. It is particularly useful for treating armpit sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis). A series of small botulinum toxin injections (usually about 12) using a tiny needle are made into the skin of each armpit. The botulinum toxin blocks the nerve impulses which control sweating within the sweat glands in the skin. The treatment can be performed in the clinic. The injections do sting a little, but no anaesthetic is required.
Side effects are minimal. Initially there may be slight bleeding from the injection sites. Some local discomfort or slight bruising may occur but usually resolves within a few days. Rarely, some arm muscle weakness may occur or allergic reactions to the drug.
The treatment is highly effective and will reduce axillary sweating in over 90% cases. Some patients do not even require any antiperspirants afterwards! But, sweating may recur within four to six months and about 70% patients will need the treatment to be repeated.
