1. What is iontophoresis and how does it work?
Strictly speaking iontophoresis is a treatment where drugs are administered through the skin using electrical stimulation. For hyperhidrosis the treatment uses ordinary tap water and is often referred to as tap water iontophoresis. The treatment involves applying a low intensity electrical current to the hands and/or feet by means of an iontophoresis machine and water baths containing tap water. The treatment is safe since the machine runs off batteries and it is pain free.
The exact mechanism for the effects of tap water iontophoresis on hyperhidrosis remains uncertain; however the treatment is effective for around 85% of people making it a safe first line treatment option.
2. How effective is tap water iontophoresis?
The results of this treatment may vary. Around 85% of people with hyperhidrosis will experience cessation of sweating after 4-7 iontophoresis treatments which often lasts for about 2 months. After the initial intensive treatment phase the hyperhidrosis can be kept under control by regular maintenance treatments. The frequency of maintenance treatments varies from person to person and might be weekly or monthly, this can be done as many times as necessary at home since patients can now buy machines for home use. Some patients may find the treatment time-consuming or inconvenient
Iontophoresis machines can be purchased for home use from STD Pharmaceuticals as well as other suppliers.
