BOTULINUM TOXIN INJECTIONS

This is relatively new treatment which is simple, safe and highly effective. It is particularly useful for treating armpit sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis). A series of small botulinum toxin injections (usually about 12) using a tiny needle are made into the skin of each armpit. The botulinum toxin blocks the nerve impulses which control sweating within the sweat glands in the skin. The treatment can be performed in the clinic. The injections do sting a little, but no anaesthetic is required.

The treatment is highly effective and will reduce axillary sweating in over 90% cases. Some patients do not even require any antiperspirants afterwards! But, sweating may recur within about six months and about 70% patients will need the treatment to be repeated.
